The World Food Safety day was commemorated at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa on 7 June 2019. The commemorations was centered on a Public Policy Dialogue with the Permanent Representative Council of AU, AU Political leaders, AUC staff, partner organizations, the media and interested stakeholders.
The occassion was graced by H.E. Kwesi Quarty, Deputy Chairperson, AUC; H.E. Amb. Josefa Leonel Sacko, Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, AUC; H.E. Amb. Osama Abdelkalek, Permanent Representative of Egypt to the AU and Chairperson of the PRC and Representatives of the Commissioner for Social Affairs, AUC and Commissioner for Trade and Industry, AUC. They gave key note address on food safety risks and their impact on health, Inter-regional and international trade as well as food and Nutrition security
The event was moderated by Dr. John Nkengasong, Director, Africa Centres for Disease Control (Africa CDC) who emphasized the need to address food safety risks, which have diverse effects public heath.
